Does the word “Hell” have any meaning to you? Or has it become so common that we’ve lost the meaning? Did what happen in the 60’s and 70’s totally destroy our understanding of ‘Hell”? Do you know what I mean?
When I was a young boy, we didn’t use the word “Hell” in our vocabulary, at least not around anyone with any authority. It made some people uncomfortable to even read the word “Hell” even if you were reading Scripture. Truth be known, there are some of you reading this right now that are a little bothered by me using it. And if I were to go on and give some examples of how common the word has become in our everyday language it would really bother some of you and I would get some emails complaining about it.
I’m with you. I wish we could go back to those times. I wish we could find those “hippies” who opened that bag and stop it from happening. But we can’t. The cat is out of the bag and we must deal with it. So I choose to deal with it by looking at Scripture. Let’s walk through a few:
Isa 33:14 “…Who of us can dwell with the consuming fire…everlasting burning?”
Matt 8:12 “…will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
Matt 10:28 “…be afraid of the one who can destroy both soul and body in hell.”
Matt 13:50 “…throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Matt 25:41 “…the eternal Fire…”
Matt 25:46 “then they will go away to eternal punishment…”
Luke 3:17 “…he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”
Luke 16:23,24,25, & 28 “ …In hell, where he was in torment…” “…in agony in this fire.” “…in agony” “…this place of torment.”
Jude 1:7 “…suffer the punishment of eternal fire.”
Rev 14:11 “…the smoke of their torment rises for ever and ever…”
Rev 20:10 “…the lake of burning sulfur…tormented day and night for ever and ever.”
Have we become so cavelier about the word ‘hell’ that we have completely lost the impact of what Scripture tells us about it? What difference would our lives reflect if we returned to taking it seriously? Why did a loving God go to such deep measures to communicate hell’s seriousness?
If you are like me then the Hell you just read about in Scripture…well…you don’t wanna go there.
